chris tiu,a real mvp

Chris tiu,the popular basketball player of ateneo.

Ateneo de Manila University’s team captain hit the go-ahead jumper to lead the Blue Eagles to a come-from-behind 65-64 win against the University of the East Red Warriors in the championship game of the 2008 Nike Summer League last June 16, 2008 at the Philsports Arena.

Tiu, who will be playing in his final year with Ateneo in the coming Universities Athletic Association of the Philippines [UAAP] campaign, scored 11 points, including the title-winning jumpshot with 26.8 seconds left in the game.

Tiu’s jumper also capped off his team’s 8-0 scoring blitz in the final 3:25, which helped the Blue Eagles come back from a 57-64 deficit and take the lead – and game – for good.

“We still have to work on our defense because it is a little suspect at times. We are about 60 percent but this victory is certainly a morale booster coming into the UAAP,” said Ateneo coach Norman Black.

Center Rabeh Al-Hussaini followed up a dominant 20-point, seven-rebound outing in the semifinals against De La Salle with 18 markers and 10 boards, while rookie Ryan Buenafe registered nine points.

UE point guard James Martinez seemed to have given his squad a comfortable margin after converting on a triple with 3:25 to go in the game. It turned out to be the Red Warriors’ final basket of the tournament.

Martinez scored 11 points, while Paul Lee had nine for the losing Warriors. Pari Llagas turned in seven points and 10 rebounds for the Recto-based squad, which was playing for a second straight day after winning the Filoil title the day before.

Ateneo’s Eric Salamat was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, and was accompanied in the the Mythical Five by De La Salle’s Rico Maierhofer and Peejay Barua, Llagas, and Far Eastern University’s Mark Barroca.
